<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I'm back. It has been a bit since I have posted but I have been busy getting my administrative license. One of the pieces that I continue to talk about and learn is that "learning" happens for me all the time and I am constantly building and personalizing my own PD (professional development).
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">I think we sometimes get stuck in the mindset of being sent to a meeting or all-day-long workshop before we get information or new tools to try. That is not the "new age" way to learn today. It can be personalized, relevant, and useful anytime you want anywhere you are. You can always be connected as little or as much as you want.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Within your own building to a learning community online we can find those great resources to pull from more now than ever. It does not have to be about just technology, it is simply a mindset with a better idea of creating a culture of digital leadership.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">With this school year coming to a close, I challenge you to spend some time this Summer looking at how you can gather information through various online resources so that you have ways to learn throughout the year and save time.
<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">

<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace;">Some examples that can help you get started:

Transformative Teaching

What is transformative teaching? Is it simply putting devices in students hands? Is it simply talking about visiting places that you are studying? Is it saying we are on our device several times a day? What is so transformative about having the device in their hands? Creating a culture for innovation and change involves so much more than surface level thinking and planning. It is constructivist pedagogy.

I want to begin this year on a transformative platform and build experiences for students. I want to see students actively engaged. Students need hands-on experiences where they analyze, create, interpret, use background knowledge, etc.., This is the type of learning that we are missing in our classrooms that create a learning culture where students are asking the tough questions of how, who, what, where, when, and why and then actually figuring it out. We need to allow them to solve real-world problems and become thinkers and doers. Technology comes into play as that tool for transformative teaching. It allows us to dive deeper in helping us solve our problems but there needs to be a balance. I'm excited to begin this year and see how transformative teaching can lead to more student success.
Have you ever wanted to learn more from other educators but don't know where to start? Where are others finding new tools or new ways of teaching? Do you want to be on the cutting edge with your students? Where do you begin??

The analogy of "How to Grow a PLN" by Sylivia Duckworth and Jacques Cool is a great way to begin this journey. I absolutely love the work of Sylvia Duckworth!

Sidenote** She is also a great follow on Twitter @sylviaduckworth and Google + +Sylvia Duckworth. See below for her Sketchnote of 'How to grow a PLN'!

Why do you need a PLN? Again, let's look at Sylvia Duckworth's Sketchnote below for some reasons why you need a PLN.

I encourage you to pick somewhere to begin. Maybe you will open a Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook account or start a blog. Maybe you will follow a ton of educators on TweetDeck, which is a great tool to efficiently use Twitter.. Maybe you will start a YouTube channel. Maybe you will invite an international connection into your classroom via Skype. If you are interested in following several blogs here are some tools for that as well such as:

feedly

digg

inoreader

diigo

I promise you will be amazed at the learning that will take place once you begin your own PLN. Take your first step today!!

In today's world, are you only working from one location? Or are you working from home, office, co-workers office, coffee shop, etc..,? Exactly...right?! I know, I read your mind because we always seem to be working from various locations and multi-tasking with students and colleagues. However, it seems like there is a tool missing to get our point across to others at times.

In the past, local meetings were easy to explain and you received quick feedback with face-to-face interaction. However, in today's world our remote meetings can sometimes be hard to explain or visualize. We want to continue to be productive, but we are still somewhat limited with chat applications, screen sharing, and even shared documents. Our students are also facing these very same issues. If you are feeling this very same way, then I want to encourage you to give Sketchboard a try!

Sketchboard

If you are looking for collaboration with visual representation for teams, then you need to check out Sketchboard. It is an endless online whiteboard that has an endless list of possibilities that can work for students and teachers alike. Are you also a Slack fan? You can also visual message on Slack with Sketchboard.

Great news!! Now you have your own personal Google trainer at your fingertips anytime, anywhere.

Google now has added a Google Chrome extension called Training for Google Apps.

Even though it is 12:43am, I can't sleep because I am so excited and I have to share the news!!

I am an official Google Certified Educator! Sometimes we deserve a pat on the back from ourselves and that is exactly what happened this afternoon for me. I kept putting this exam off because I was nervous that I might not know enough to take this exam, even though I felt confident in many areas. I did review the training section in the training center and felt confident. I signed up and once I logged into the test and noticed the start button, the good ole' test anxiety set in. However, once I pushed the start button on this exam, I took a deep breath and just treated it like any other day at the office and was confident in myself. Confidence is key! I begin to feel comfortable and relaxed which helped me pass this exam.

I'm very excited to continue this journey that will lead to my main goal of becoming a Google Innovator. Being an educator is a personal journey of constantly learning. Being a Tech Integration Specialist for the past 2 years, I have enjoyed helping others learn new skills and integrate them into classrooms. I continue to learn better ways to accomplish so many different tasks everyday. This will only continue to help me grow as an educator to better prepare our teachers/students in the classrooms.

If you are wondering about the Level 1 exam, my suggestion is to study for your Google Certification. You need to review the training sessions until you feel comfortable with all areas. Join us in continuing our education as educators!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Have you ever wondered if you were searching Google the correct way or even the smartest way? There are many symbols and words (search operators) you can use to make your searching easier and to narrow down results. This can not only help you but can also really improve your students researching skills. It is very important that students know how to search the vast array of information on the web in the most efficient way.
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I wanted to share with you some ways that can make your Google searching much easier.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">
I found all of this info on the Google Help Page<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">First off, I wanted to discuss the Omnibox (also known as the address bar) which will allow you to search from typing into the box at the top of the browser.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Start with a simple search and choose your words carefully (Ex: where's the closest McDonald's). Don't worry about the spelling or capitalization of words (Ex: Texas is the same as texas) If you are wanting quick information, you can type these 5 keywords in and get instant results. This is useful for words with multiple meanings, like Jaguar the car brand and jaguar the animal.
Example:
"imagine all the people"

*

Add an asterisk as a placeholder for any unknown or wildcard terms. .

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">You can also use certain words (search operators) that can be added to searches to help narrow results. When searching in Google you can always go to the Advanced Search page to help narrow down results as well. Create Your "Own" Google Custom Search Engine

Do you have students turning in research papers with unreliable sources? Are they spending countless hours trying to find sources for their paper? You can create your own Google Custom Search Engine and have students searching within specific websites that you choose. This saves time and helps them stay on task.

Where do I begin?

Go to: google.com/cse

Create New Search Engine

In the 'Sites to Search'

Add the URL/pages you want to include in your search engine

You can get fancy and add URL patterns

Select the Language you want

Select 'Advanced' if you want to Exclude URLs

Click 'Create'

You can grab the code to embed in a website or the link to share with your students

You can always go back in and edit your search engine (add/delete sites and change any of the above info)

It's time for teachers to ride shotgun!! -Brooke Hall

In order for us to drive a car and receive our driver's license, we are put in the driver seat. We might take a class or some lessons from an instructor, but then we are put behind the wheel to prove our learning.

Why do we not look at education in the same way? Why do we think that listening to someone lecture and taking a test to prove that we listened, suffice as learning. I know when I look back on the things that I learned, I was engaged and in charge of my own learning with a goal in mind. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying don't test students or set benchmarks. I'm simply saying to allow students to be in charge of their own learning. Give them a choice to show what they know. We do not have to be the center of teaching at all times. We can ride shotgun with the students helping guide and facilitate their learning.

Sometimes with Educational Technology we get caught up in the glitter and the Next Big Thing (NBT) that we forget the important pieces. It's not about the shiny new Macbook or iPad in the students hands or the great new apps downloaded. It's about the NBT which is the right in front of you, the ones filling your classroom chairs ready to dive in and show you what they know. Each year we have the NBT moment with a new set of students in our classroom. They can take those shiny devices and create something amazing for the world to see.

When we put student's in the drivers seat, amazing things can happen:

I read a recent article where Staple's teamed up with Ron Clark's students and others around the country this past year. The result of this real-world opportunity was a new line of back-to-school products designed by students. The skills these students had to use in order to design, propose, work with an authentic audience, and pitching the product is as real-world as it gets. They can take these skills and continue to use and develop these skills as they grow. This is what it's all about, this is authentic learning!! Assessment/benchmarks become a piece of cake when we turn our classroom into a real-world setting with real-world lessons. Take a look at your standards and objectives and see what you can turn into a real-world lesson.
Failing is not an option in my book. It's a learning process that will make each of us smarter because of it. Understanding that being a lifelong learner results in being uncomfortable sometimes, is a good sign you are on the right path to success!!

I shared this Sketchnote by Sylvia Duckworth with the teachers at my district because I wanted them to think about 'Success" and what it truly means. Sometimes we get so busy that we forget that success doesn't happen overnight. We attend conferences and see all the amazing teachers, admins, and classrooms being transformed but we get discouraged and give up because we forget to ask the question..."How did they get there?" Their schools and classrooms did not transform overnight. There was hard work involved and many failures before they found what worked best for them. Sometimes, many think that reading a few articles, downloading a few apps, and putting a device in our students hands will result in our classroom being transformed in a week or a month.

Take a look at the below Sketchnote (Credit:Sylvia Duckworth) and really think about all the pieces that go into being successful.

SketchNote Credit: Sylvia Duckworth

We need to remember to dig down deep and look at the root of success to see what it really takes. There is hard work, sacrifice, disappointment, persistence, developing good habits, and a dedication involved in being successful that no one may never see. However, by sharing and owning those failures, learning from disappointments, being that persistent educator, and developing those good habits will result in a successful, engaging environment where students witness what success looks like!! Be that educator that understands what it takes to be successful and begin constructing your iceberg today!

Get motivated by others and pay it forward by motivating the world.! You never know who is watching!! - Brooke Hall

For the second part of this 'Go Chrome or Go Home' series, let's dive into Gmail. There are many quick and easy tricks to stay organized and be more productive. Let's get started on using your Gmail account and take advantage of becoming a more tech-savvy teacher.

Search Your Gmail:
Gmail provides a powerful search function within your Gmail to help you quickly find those important emails instead of searching through hundreds.

Use 'Tasks' to Get Things Done

Keep a list of things that you need to get done within your Gmail. If you click on the small arrow beside mail in left corner, you will see tasks. This will allow you to keep a to-do list.

You will then see a 'Task' box pop up in the lower right hand corner. Here you can add to your to-do list(s) and check it off as you go.

Check your Spelling

You probably hear many people talking about using Chrome. Why choose Google Chrome over the other browsers? I'm sure you wonder what the big deal is and think who cares about what browser you use.

I attended a conference this week and attended a session by +Kyle Pace called, "Go Chrome or Go Home." Hence, where my blog series is coming from, thank you Kyle! I learned many new tools in the session and it reminded why Google Chrome is my go-to browser. Many people use the web to browse or search and there are some great ways to be a better "searcher." If you are not using this browser, you are missing out on many opportunities for you and your students. I would like to start out by talking about simply searching in Google Chrome for the first post in this series. I will follow up with more posts about: Gmail, Extensions, Apps, Bookmarking, & more!
Google Search:

Get Better at Searching

Search within OmniBox (Combined Search & Address Bar) and save time.

Use Voice Search - If you prefer to talk rather than type. To activate "OK Google" just head to your browser settings and enable "OK Google" search command.

This will allow you to speak into Google Search to find what you are looking for. You can say most of these examples in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, but some aren't available in every language.

When you see the microphone, just say, "Ok Google" and whatever you want to search for, just like you would type it. Google should talk back to your with your answer.

Search within specific site - If you or your students are researching a topic and only want to search a specific site, that is possible. You just need to type that site into Omnibox. Ex: great wall of china site:cnn.com

Learn to use Search Operators and Punctuations to get more specific search results - Find all listed here: https://goo.gl/6aP09x You will want to type these just as you see in the examples. This will be typed into the Omnibox or search box. Here are a few to get you started:

# Find popular hashtags for trending topics Ex: #WeAreSCSD1

- When you use a dash before a word or site, it excludes sites with that info from your results. This is useful for words with multiple meanings, like Jaguar the car brand and jaguar the animal. Examples: jaguar speed -car or pandas -site:wikipedia.org

" When you put a word or phrase in quotes, the results will only include pages with the same words in the same order as the ones inside the quotes. Only use this if you're looking for an exact word or phrase, otherwise you'll exclude many helpful results by mistake. Example: "imagine all the people"

link Find pages that link to a certain page. Example: link:youtube.com

info Get information about a web address, including the cached version of the page, similar pages, and pages that link to the site. Example: info:google.com

Create Custom Google Search - Visit google.com/cse You can customize what sites will be used when students are researching topics.

Create an account at Kahoot It and begin making your first Kahoot. Student do not have to create an account to participate in your Kahoot, but they can create an account to make their own Kahoot.

There a 3 types of Kahoot's that can created:

Quiz - Most common type of Kahoot, with a game-based approach to blended learning. There is not limit to the number of questions in a quiz. Each question can have an associated picture or video, and 2-4 multiple choice answers. There must be at least one correct answer (but more can be chosen), and the time-limit for each question can be individually set from 5 seconds to 2 minutes. This can be a great way to formatively assess the knowledge of each individual and adapt their learning accordingly. The players answer will be displayed at the front of the room on the screen, this will motivate to answer correctly and score the most points. The faster someone answers a question correctly, the more points they get. The top 5 highest points scorers are displayed on the leaderboard on the screen in-between each question, and the top winner is shown at the end. You will receive results at the end of who answered what for each question. This can also be downloaded afterwards.

Discussion - Facilitation a conversation with your students. These are simple one quick question with no right or wrong answer, which can have associated picture or video and 2-4 alternative answers. Discussion could be used to gather opinions on an array of topics.

Survey - There are no limits to the number of questions in a survey. Each question can have an associated picture or video, and 2-4 multiple choice answers. However, there are no right or wrong answers. They are just like traditional surveys except questions are asked in real-time to those present who answer on their personal devices. All survey results can be downloaded at the end.

You also have the option to re-order questions by dragging and dropping them into place. You can see the time limit that you have set on each question. Before finishing you can fill in more info about your Kahoot such as Language, Privacy Settings, Primary Audience, Description, Difficulty Level, and tags. You will then be given an option to add a cover image for your Kahoot.

Once you press Play Now, you will be taken to the screen that will give you the 'Game Pin' to share with your students. The students will use this link: kahoot.it to enter the Game Pin. Once the students begin to join, you will see their name appear on your screen. I would suggest displaying this screen for everyone to see. You are ready to walk your students through your Kahoot! Download the results at the end to see their individual results.

Enjoy Kahoot!!
You have to step out of the box and know that sometimes things will fail and not be perfect. Teachers need to be comfortable asking questions and working with their colleagues.

Many teachers go into a classroom, close the door and never interact with the person across the hall.

Take this opportunity to look at the poster below and begin to model these characteristics. Pick one or two and slowly work your way into the other areas.
Students can create their own Symbaloo and share their learning space with their most used websites, such as their blog, social networking sites, classroom blog, and school website. They can also embed presentations, videos, and google docs into their webmix. This would be a great way for students to share info about a topic they are researching.

By having students create their own Symbaloo they are not searching all over the web for their content everyday because it is all in one place. This will save a teacher time in the classroom from having to constantly wait until everyone gets to the website or video.

I like a spirited debate, but more importantly I like any conversation that makes me think. I'll start by sharing this quote, "If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." -John Dewey. The world that we knew and the world today, is far from being the same. We have to “Step Up" and teach students how to be creative, communicate, problem solve, and collaborate using skills that are needed today. How are we suppose to have student engagement, when we are not up-to-date? We are not meeting the needs or demands of the changes in our society or our students.

The cost is going to come whether it be with devices or textbooks. The textbooks become outdated and only take us so far. The device allows a classroom to finally explore beyond the textbook and classroom walls. It's actually going to save us money, once we fully implement technology.
I agree, "it's the new thing, kids like it" is very lame. That's not the answer. Look how long we have had computers and technology in our schools, it’s not new. However, technology is new in the world, because it changes practically everyday. Today our students experience instant feedback and they are finding answers to their own questions. Why are we not providing this to our students? It’s our chance to guide and teach in new, exciting ways. We need to tap into this and take our students to the next level. Our students should be keeping up with educators not the other way around.

The device is simply a device, what you do with the device is the bigger question. A lack of devotion to
pedagogy, professional development, creativity, and learning how to play/try new things is a definite “fail” no matter what technology you try to use. The device is simply a tool to enhance the learning experience. It’s certainly not a foreign object and this tool creates endless possibilities for your classrooms, when used in the right ways. The focus HAS to be on teaching not the device.

However, at our level, there still needs to be the balance of face to face and online learning. A device can help reach all students, and those students that you would never hear from otherwise. A device speaks volumes for students with learning disabilities/impairments. This alone answers the question “why use technology/devices?” Talking about reaching and teaching to all, this is a great starting point.
Some of our parents struggle with reading, math, writing, etc..., but a device will read a story to a child and the parent. The teacher can post a video working through a math problem. This bridges the gap from school to home. It allows the parent to actually understand and then begin to help. We will not reach all parents and we can't make them help, that is reality. However, we can model and educate to the best of our ability, because example is one of the best ways to teach.
Few Examples..
Example: Enhancing the communication and collaboration with the students in a class through a forum discussion board vs. classroom discussion. This allows students to think beyond the 45 minute class period, instant feedback within discussion forum, continuing the discussion, and will bring students to the discussion that would never say a word in class.
Example: Google Earth- virtually step out of the classroom and travel across the U.S. to explore the aircraft bone yard, White House, Gettysburg, etc..,
Example: Google Maps - Street View- learn how to get from point A to point B. We cure the disease by having balance and educating proper use. Understanding that you can "unplug" is key to understanding how technology can enhance, not hinder our work-life balance. We need to model ways to have that balance with students, parents, and our own families. Technology is neither good nor bad in a sense. The same hammer can both break windows and build cathedrals. It's how we utilize and create the destination for our goals. What kind of learning do you want to build for your students? Where do you want to go?
Without the eagerness to learn/try new things, self-explore, be open-minded to change, step out of the box, and understand that a device is just a tool, nothing is going to change. “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used, when we created them.” -Unknown

We can get hung up on the pros and cons of technology/devices. Technology is in our everyday lives whether we want it to be or not. The world has changed and continues to make huge strides with technology. Why would we not educate our students with tools they are expected to use in the real world setting? When students leave our building for the workforce or college, are we preparing them for what lies outside of our building? Are they equipped with the necessary skills? These are the questions we need to be asking ourselves.Brooke Hallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16624075280108860045noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9187189179018882681.post-67833661486293237772014-08-02T04:18:00.001-07:002014-08-02T04:29:47.120-07:00TodaysMeet - Check out this great tool

TodaysMeet might be a digital tool that you have been looking for. It's been referred to as a backchannel - the conversation behind what's going on. It's a quick personal chat space where you can have discussions in realtime with students or colleagues. What a great way to get students involved in discussion and draw even the quietest students into discussions

Just go to https://todaysmeet.com/accounts/signup and signup for a "free" account. Your students/colleagues do not have to sign-up to post as long as "anyone" is selected under more options.

Create a room, give your room a name "Algebra 1" (no spaces, periods, or other characters). Choose when your class closes (i.e. how long you want class open). Click on more options and make sure "anyone" is marked. Then click "open your room."

***At the bottom of your room you will see a box (copy button beside it) with "http://today.etcc... " you will want to click and select the URL to share your room.

Your done. Yep, that's it. You just created a "class" and are ready to share the URL. Once you have shared the URL others can join the room, type their name, and post a message. Each message is limited to 140 characters. Also, everyone that has joined the class can view all of the posts.

TodaysMeet also allows you to access a transcript and projector option as well.

Ways to use in classroom:

1. Discussions: Create discussion and see students comment and even the shyest students participating.

2. Questions: Students can post questions during a lesson that you can address after the lesson. This is giving them instant feedback and while it is still fresh in their minds.

3. Share Info/Links: Teachers can quickly post links for students to visit or students can share links for research. These can be printed using the "transcript" and viewed for content and participation.

4. Feedback: Gather feedback from students about lessons, assignments, or to expand the learning experience. Maybe they have ideas about something they want to learn about.

5. Anonymous Feedback: Students can post their answers and you can ask them to NOT type their names (same character or name for everyone) when they post.

6. Hold online office hours: Create a class where students can ask questions at a certain time.

7. Connect with other classroom: Great way to invite other classrooms from your school or outside the walls of your school into the class discussion.

8. Challenge Contest: Create a challenge activity. Post a question or problem and the first student who answers correctly wins (you can figure the prize out).

9. Practice digital citizenship: Talk about online manners and how to talk to others online.

10. Group Projects: Students can work on projects and share useful links, articles, and other information with each other.

11. PD/Staff Discussions: I will be posting TodaysMeets throughout the year for feedback and discussions on various topics. This will help with our time constraints on PD.

Do you have any suggestions for using TodaysMeet in the classroom? I hope you find this useful and will try it with your classes. Please share by leaving a comment.
